Application Reset

There is a little hack in place that might do what you want. If you go to the "Portal" page, it will flush the cache, except on postbacks since that would mean you've already been there and are just making changes. I found it useful for debugging, and never did expose that better.

Hi Paul,

It would be great to have an option to reset the running application. Sometimes I find that I need to reset the app for some of my changes to take effect. I usually 'touch' the web.config to affect this.

Hi Chau:

Its definitely on my list, and certainly is a high priority, but I haven't started any of those changes yet. There's also something to be said for not updating stable applications too often, as that can cause a vicious cycle. So right now I'm enjoying my web sites all running nicely, making some changes to the ORMapper instead, reading/reviewing some books, and starting to think about some articles. I also have to get ready for my talk on custom providers at the Atlanta Code Camp, and I still need to officially announce this WebPortal in a loud public mannner, with a contest to encourage more modules and skins/themes, now that its proven itself nicely.

Hi Paul,

It'd be good to have the content copied too. The database that I allude to in my email is an external database, nothing to do with the Portal database per se. Each of my clients has his own database with their application data (not portal), which I will be accessing via Modules (akin to the UIMapper).

Great idea. A couple of questions:

1. Would you be copying any content also, or just the page/part definitions?
2. Do you really need a different database? Is that a common portal requirement?

Hi Paul,

Great product! Might I suggest that a Portal copy function be implemented. I have a load of applications/Portals that have exactly the same Pages, layout, parts, modules, etc, but require a different Portal for each customer. The only differences are that each customer will have his/her own logos, and database.

I think it would be a great addition, although I'm not sure its the type of thing that I would be able to do well enough. I'm going to be announcing a contest very soon to try to get others to start creating some good modules (and skins/themes), so maybe one will be created that may. As for how to go about it -- I can't speak to the chat room technical issues, but I do believe that the WebPortal framework puts very few requirements on you so that its mostly just a matter of creating an ASP.NET control as you would have done already. That also means that you may be able to easily encapsulate an existing control that provides the functionality you want -- which is what I have done with my file tree/viewer since I chose to just wrap my existing controls that provided that functionality.

Yes, that's pretty much what I mean. The one thing I would call out to make sure you are thinking the same thing as me is that I would not be actually localizing content for you -- I would make it possible for you to create content for multiple locales. And yes that would include thing like navigation and labels/titles. When will that be done? That I cannot really say, since it depends on my time, but it is a high priority, although its also very possible that lower priority items that are much easier may get done sooner -- so priority isn't everything. But it is a very high priority as I discovered in my previous version of WilsonDotNet that the localizability was a very big draw.

does that mean detecting browser setting and localizing content automatically, and then also having a language selector somewhere, where it is saved in the session, and saved in by the ProfileProvider if the user is logged in? so if we ability to input Spanish content for the same HTML page and the user can choose which default language they see? all the navigation and labels are localizable also?

Any rough estimate on when these will be done and any idea what is next on the list?

I am working on a website and using WORM, but not sure how much work it would take to convert my modules over yet....

I don't know if it's due to caching or what, but it appears that the aggregate feed on all three sites (ORMapper.net, WilsonDotNet, and WilsonWebPortal) are all pulling the same feed.

UI Mapper module

Hi Sean:

There actually is a set of controls called ListView and EditView that are basically very similar to the ones I had in the UIMapper. The approach is scaled down, so the setup is now done in code instead of an xml mapping file, but it is still very simple (maybe more so actually) to use. The features are pretty much the same too -- in some cases there are actually more features, in some cases a few less although that's probably a short-term situation. All of the admin lists use the ListView control, and all of my editting screens, both admin and regular modules, use the EditView. That's not to say that someone creating their own modules has to use them, as the WebPortal framework itself does not require any such thing, but these controls are availble to make things easier and more consistent. So what do you think -- is this enough, and if not what more are you looking for?
